GENEPI OR CHARTREUSE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Genepi and Chartreuse are two iconic liqueurs from the French mountains, but they differ in their origin, composition and taste.

Genepi is a liqueur made from different varieties of Artemisia, a rare alpine plant found in the Hautes-Alpes, Savoie, and Isère regions. Its artisanal recipe involves macerating the plant in alcohol, sometimes accompanied by other herbs such as tansy, sage, or angelica. The result is a sweet, floral liqueur with a lovely vegetal freshness. At De Michellot, our genepi liqueur is made from hand-picked plants for an authentic and balanced taste.

Chartreuse, on the other hand, is a complex liqueur developed by the monks of the Grande Chartreuse since the 18th century. It is composed of 130 secret botanicals and distilled using a unique method. There are two main variants: Green Chartreuse (55°) and Yellow Chartreuse (40°), with spicier, more powerful, and sweeter profiles than génépi.

👉 In summary:

Génépi: floral, sweet, artisanal alpine liqueur.
Chartreuse: complex, spicy, historic monastic liqueur.
For lovers of plant-based spirits, génépi offers a lighter and more accessible alternative to Chartreuse, while remaining deeply rooted in mountain tradition.
