Dry January 2027: Alternatives and Liqueur-Inspired Mocktails Published on January 6, 2027 | Reading time: 8 min | Category: Info Summary What is Dry January and why participate in 2027? The benefits of an alcohol-free month The best alcohol-free alternatives 5 mocktails inspired by artisanal liqueurs Syrups and infusions: the art of alcohol-free Resuming tasting after January What is Dry January and why participate in 2027? Dry January is a challenge originating in the UK in 2013, which involves not consuming alcohol for the entire month of January. In 2027, this movement is more popular than ever in France, with millions of participants choosing to start the year by taking care of their health. This initiative does not mean giving up the pleasure of taste, however. On the contrary, it is the ideal opportunity to discover a world of alternative flavors, sophisticated mocktails, and alcohol-free artisanal drinks that rival the best cocktails. At De Michellot, we believe that the culture of tasting transcends the mere presence of alcohol. Dry January is also a time for reflection on our relationship with alcohol. Far from being a deprivation, it is an enriching interlude that allows us to redefine our consumption habits and discover new taste experiences. In 2027, alternatives are more numerous, more qualitative, and more accessible than ever. The growing success of Dry January in France is explained by several factors: a collective awareness of the effects of alcohol, the rise of alcohol-free mixology in bars and restaurants, and the increasing quality of alcohol-free products available on the market. According to the latest studies, nearly 20% of French people declared having participated in Dry January in 2026, a figure that is constantly increasing. The benefits of an alcohol-free month Participating in Dry January offers many concrete benefits, both physical and psychological. Here are the main benefits you can expect: Improved sleep Alcohol disrupts sleep cycles, even in small amounts. After just two weeks without alcohol, most participants report deeper, more restorative sleep and easier waking in the morning. REM sleep, essential for brain recovery, returns to its optimal duration. Increased energy and concentration Without the dehydrating and inflammatory effects of alcohol, your body regains impressive vitality. Concentration improves, chronic fatigue decreases, and you feel generally more alert throughout the day. Many participants also notice an improvement in their overall mood. Benefits for skin and digestion Alcohol dehydrates the skin and can cause redness or acne. A month without alcohol allows the skin to regain its natural radiance. The digestive system, freed from the irritation caused by ethanol, functions more smoothly. The liver, in particular, benefits from this break to partially regenerate. Financial savings An often-underestimated advantage: temporarily stopping alcohol can represent significant savings. On average, a French person spends between 50 and 150 euros per month on alcoholic beverages. This amount can be reinvested in alternative culinary experiences or, why not, in the purchase of quality artisanal liqueurs to be tasted in moderation in February. The best alcohol-free alternatives The alcohol-free beverage market has undergone a real revolution in recent years. In 2027, the options are numerous and qualitative: Alcohol-free spirits Many brands now offer alcohol-free botanical distillates that reproduce the aromatic complexity of traditional spirits. These products use distillation techniques similar to those of artisanal liqueurs, but without alcoholic fermentation. They feature notes of herbs, spices, and fruits that allow for the creation of elaborate cocktails without a drop of alcohol. De-alcoholized beers and wines The quality of alcohol-free beers and wines has made spectacular progress. Modern de-alcoholization techniques make it possible to preserve most of the aromas and structure of the original product. Some alcohol-free craft beers now rival their alcoholic counterparts in terms of taste complexity. Kombucha and kefirs These naturally fermented drinks contain tiny traces of alcohol (less than 0.5%) and offer a fascinating aromatic richness. Kombucha, in particular, with its tangy and slightly sparkling notes, is an excellent base for original mocktails. The probiotics it contains are a significant health bonus. Homemade flavored waters Sometimes, simplicity is key. Waters infused with fresh herbs, citrus fruits, or flowers offer a refreshing and elegant experience. Cold infusion of cucumber and mint, or raspberry and basil, can distinctively accompany a gourmet meal. 5 mocktails inspired by artisanal liqueurs Here are five mocktail recipes inspired by the aromatic profiles of De Michellot liqueurs. Then add the ice cubes and shake vigorously again. Strain into a champagne coupe and decorate with rose petals. The silky texture and floral aromas evoke the elegance of flower liqueurs. 5. The Smoking Room Inspired by woody liqueurs 5 cl chilled Lapsang Souchong tea infusion 3 cl maple syrup 2 cl lemon juice 1 dash of alcohol-free bitters Orange zest Preparation: Mix all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice cubes. This mocktail has the depth and character of barrel-aged liqueurs. Syrups and infusions: the art of alcohol-free The key to a successful Dry January lies in the quality of the substitute ingredients. Homemade syrups and artisanal infusions are your best allies for creating complex and satisfying drinks. Making your own syrups Making homemade syrups is an art accessible to everyone. The basic principle is simple: heat equal parts sugar and water, then infuse the aromatic ingredients of your choice. Here are some basic recipes: Rosemary syrup: 200 g sugar, 200 ml water, 4 sprigs fresh rosemary. Heat until sugar dissolves, add rosemary, let infuse for 30 minutes off heat, then strain. Ginger syrup: 200 g sugar, 200 ml water, 100 g grated fresh ginger. Bring to a boil, simmer for 10 minutes, then strain. Add a pinch of black pepper for extra spice. Lavender syrup: 200 g sugar, 200 ml water, 2 tablespoons dried lavender. Heat, add lavender off heat, infuse for 20 minutes and strain. Be careful not to over-infuse to avoid bitterness. These syrups can be stored for two to three weeks in the refrigerator in an airtight container. They form the perfect base for experimenting with your own mocktail creations. The world of cold infusions Cold infusion, or cold brew, is a technique that extracts the most delicate aromas from ingredients without the bitterness that heat can bring. Simply place your ingredients in cold water and let them infuse in the refrigerator for 4 to 12 hours. Red fruits, citrus fruits, fresh herbs, and edible flowers are particularly well suited to this method. Alcohol-free bitters Alcohol-free bitters represent a booming category. Made from plant extracts, barks, and spices in a vegetable glycerin base, they provide the complexity and depth often lacking in alcohol-free beverages. A few drops are enough to transform a simple fruit juice into a sophisticated drink. Resuming tasting after January Dry January ends, but the lessons it teaches endure. After a month-long break, your palate is more sensitive, and your appreciation of flavors is tenfold. It's the ideal time to discover or rediscover De Michellot artisanal liqueurs with a fresh perspective. Mindful tasting, which you will have practiced throughout the month with your mocktails, applies wonderfully to artisanal liqueurs. Take the time to smell, observe the color, let the liquid coat your palate before swallowing. You will discover nuances you may never have perceived before. Dry January can also be an opportunity to redefine your relationship with alcohol in the long term. Many participants choose to maintain certain habits acquired during the month: systematically alternating alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, treating themselves to better quality products in smaller quantities, or reserving alcohol consumption for truly convivial moments.
