    De Michellot

Jägermeister 2026: 56-Plant Composition, History, and Craft Alternatives

Jägermeister, the iconic German bitter liqueur created in 1934 by Curt Mast in Wolfenbüttel, is made from 56 plants, herbs, flowers, roots, and fruits. ABV 35%. Discover its composition, history, and French craft alternatives.

History — From Wolfenbüttel to Global Phenomenon

Curt Mast, heir to a family of wine merchants, developed this recipe in 1934, inspired by German hunters' digestifs. The name "Jägermeister" literally means "Master Hunter." The St. Hubertus stag adorns the iconic label.

    The 56 Secret Ingredients

Although the exact recipe remains confidential, identified ingredients include: star anise, badian, cardamom, ginger, bitter orange peel, gentian root, licorice root, rosemary, lavender, cinnamon bark, cloves, juniper berries, oak bark, and numerous aromatic plants. Maceration for 70-90 days followed by 1 year of aging in oak barrels.

Jägermeister vs. French Craft Alternatives Comparison

In contrast to industrial Mast-Jägermeister SE (producing 100M+ bottles/year), French craft distilleries offer more authentic alternatives: De Michellot gentian liqueur (24%, Central Massif root), alpine plant digestifs, and craft bitters.

    Iconic Jägermeister Cocktails

Jäger Bomb (shot in Red Bull), Jäger Mule (mule twist), Jägerita (margarita twist), Killer Punch (multi-fruit), Jaeger Manhattan, Hot Jäger (winter mulled wine).
