Chartreuse Shortage 2022-2026: Reasons + Alternatives
Since 2022, the Carthusian Monks have been voluntarily limiting the production of Chartreuse to preserve their contemplative monastic life. The result: a global shortage, skyrocketing prices (green 70cl at €50-80, rare VEPs at €200+).
Why this limitation?
Official Carthusian statement 2022: "Production has been constantly increasing for 30 years. This growth is incompatible with our contemplative vocation." Decision to cap production at 2018 levels.
7 French artisanal alternatives
1. Génépi De Michellot 35% (alpine plant, similar herbaceous profile). 2. Génépi Dolin, Distillerie des Pères. 3. Verveine du Velay (Pagès, artisanal alternative). 4. Verveine De Michellot 30%. 5. Independent alpine plant liqueurs. 6. Chartreuse-style plant syrup (non-alcoholic). 7. Independent alternative distilleries.
