Get 27 vs De Michellot Mint Liqueur: The Complete Comparison When one thinks of mint liqueur in France, one name immediately comes to mind: Get 27. An emblematic product of the 1980s and 1990s, this green liqueur long reigned unchallenged in French bars and parties. But times are changing, palates are evolving, and consumers are now looking for more authentic, natural, and artisanal alternatives. It is precisely in this context that De Michellot mint liqueur stands out as a prime alternative. So, Get 27 or De Michellot? This complete comparison will help you make your choice with full knowledge of the facts. Get 27: An Industrial History The Origins of Get 27 Get 27 takes its name from its creator, Jean Get, a distiller from Revel, near Toulouse. Launched at the beginning of the 20th century, this 21% alcohol mint liqueur (formerly 27%, hence the name) quickly established itself thanks to a massive distribution strategy and memorable advertising campaigns. The number 27 refers to the original alcohol content of the recipe, although the product has since been reformulated. A Now Industrial Product Since the 2000s, the Get 27 brand has belonged to the Bacardi-Martini group, a global spirits giant. This acquisition led to a complete industrialization of production. Manufacturing volumes are in the millions of liters, distribution is global, and the recipe has been standardized to ensure perfect homogeneity from one batch to another. This industrialization comes at a price: the use of artificial mint flavors, synthetic colorings to achieve its characteristic green color, and a manufacturing process optimized for yield rather than taste quality. Today's Get 27 has little in common with Jean Get's original artisanal recipe. The Composition of Get 27 A look at the list of Get 27 ingredients reveals several elements that alert the informed consumer: Flavors: The generic term "flavors" most often refers to synthetic flavors, far from natural peppermint extraction. Colorants: The intense green color of Get 27 comes from food colorings, not from the plant itself. Sugar: The sugar content is particularly high, which can mask a lack of aromatic complexity. Neutral alcohol: The alcoholic base is a neutral alcohol of agricultural origin, without particular character. De Michellot: The Return to Craftsmanship A Radically Different Philosophy The De Michellot mint liqueur is part of a fundamental movement: the return to authentic products, carefully made with natural ingredients. Far from automated factories and large-scale production lines, De Michellot offers an artisanal approach to mint liqueur. Natural Ingredients The fundamental difference between Get 27 and De Michellot liqueur lies in the ingredients. At De Michellot, the mint used is real peppermint, selected for its exceptional aromatic qualities. No artificial flavors, no synthetic colorings: the color and taste come directly from the plant. This approach implies production constraints that the industry does not impose on itself: batches may vary slightly from season to season, yield is lower, and the production cost is higher. But the result on the palate is incomparable. An Alcohol Content of 25% vol. With its 25% alcohol, De Michellot mint liqueur offers a remarkable balance between aromatic power and sweetness. This alcohol content allows the mint to express itself fully without being crushed by the alcohol, while providing enough structure for cocktails and neat tasting. The Detailed Comparison The Taste: The Fundamental Difference It is, of course, on the palate that the difference is most striking. Get 27 offers an immediately recognizable but one-dimensional mint sensation: a sweet and mentholated taste, quite flat, with a short finish. The sensation is that of a liquid mint candy. De Michellot liqueur, on the other hand, reveals a surprising aromatic complexity. Natural peppermint brings herbaceous, slightly peppery notes, with an authentic freshness that evolves on the palate. One detects vegetal nuances, a hint of noble bitterness, and a long, refreshing finish. It's the difference between industrial orange juice and freshly squeezed fruit juice. The Production Criterion Get 27 De Michellot Production Industrial (Bacardi) Artisanal Mint Flavors (presumably synthetic) Natural peppermint Colorants Food colorings Natural coloring Alcohol content 21% vol. 25% vol. Origin International production France Sugar High Moderate, balanced The Price: A Justified Investment To be honest: De Michellot liqueur costs more than Get 27. But this price difference is entirely explained by the quality of the ingredients and the manufacturing method. Buying a bottle of Get 27 means paying for an industrial product with a high margin for a multinational group. Buying a bottle of De Michellot means investing in artisanal know-how and exceptional raw materials. To put things in perspective: we often spend more on a specialty coffee than on instant coffee, more on a farm cheese than on an industrial cheese. The logic is the same with mint liqueur. Use in Cocktails Get 27 has long been the default choice for mint-based cocktails, mainly because it was the only widely available product. But professional bartenders increasingly agree on one point: a superior quality mint liqueur radically transforms a cocktail. Whether in a Grasshopper, a Stinger, a revisited Mojito, or simply served on ice, De Michellot liqueur brings an aromatic dimension that Get 27 cannot offer. The complexity of natural mint blends better with other ingredients and creates more balanced and sophisticated cocktails. Why Consumers Are Changing The "Drink Better" Trend The spirits market has been undergoing a major evolution for several years: consumers are drinking less, but better. This trend, particularly pronounced among 25-45 year olds, translates into a search for authentic products, with a history, a terroir, and transparent production. Get 27, with its image as a mass-market product and its industrial production, no longer meets these expectations. De Michellot liqueur, on the other hand, ticks all the boxes: artisanal production, natural ingredients, French history, and know-how. Ingredient Transparency Today's consumers want to know what they are drinking. They read labels, learn about manufacturing processes, and reject products whose composition is opaque. The generic term "flavors" on a label is no longer enough: we want to know where the mint comes from, how it is processed, and what gives the liqueur its color. De Michellot plays the card of total transparency. Each ingredient is identified, each production step is documented. This honesty creates a bond of trust with the consumer that goes far beyond a simple commercial transaction. Support for French Craftsmanship Buying a Get 27 means feeding the revenues of a multinational group whose headquarters are in Bermuda. Buying a De Michellot liqueur means supporting French craftsmanship, local know-how, and a local economy. For many consumers, this argument now weighs as much as taste in their purchasing decision.
