Cognac Borderies: The Rarest of the 6 Crus + Why Pasquet is Exceptional

Borderies is the smallest and rarest of the 6 crus of the Cognac AOC: only 4% of the total area (~4,000 hectares of vineyards). Its unique clay-siliceous soils produce cognacs with inimitable floral iris-violet aromas. Discover the Pasquet Borderies Lot 30.A 51.3% MAQUISARDS, a single cask artisan since 1730 at De Michellot.

    The 6 Cognac AOC Crus

    1. Grande Champagne (limestone, 13,200 ha). 2. Petite Champagne (limestone, 16,200 ha). 3. Borderies (clay-flint, 4,000 ha — the rarest). 4. Fins Bois (~33,000 ha). 5. Bons Bois (~13,000 ha). 6. Bois Ordinaires (~1,100 ha).

    Borderies Specificity

Clay-siliceous soils from the Tertiary era. Unique aromas: iris, violet, dried fruits (walnut, almond), acacia honey. Rapid maturation 8-12 years (vs 15-25 years Grande Champagne). Highly sought after by houses (Martell signature).

Maison Pasquet (Saint-Préuil, Borderies since 1730)

Pasquet family, 11th generation of winemakers. Confidential production ~5,000 bottles/year. Single cask, identified lots. Lot 30.A 51.3% at De Michellot — unfiltered, undiluted (cask strength), 30 years in Limousin cask.

    Why Single Cask vs. Blend?

Industrial (Hennessy, Rémy): blends 100+ casks for absolute consistency. Artisan single cask (Pasquet): 1 cask = 1 bottle = unique, unrepeatable character. Single cask = investment collection.

    Tasting Pasquet Lot 30.A 51.3%

Color: deep amber, copper reflections. Nose: iris, violet, bourbon vanilla, dried fruits. Palate: powerful attack, velvety mid-palate, endless finish of candied fruits + sweet spices. Serving: tulip glass, 18-20°C, no ice.

    Collection Investment

Pasquet single cask = collector's item. Historic lots (60s-70s) fetch €5,000-€15,000/bottle. Current Lot 30.A = €89 at De Michellot — potential x10-50 investment over 20 years.

    Conclusion

The Cognac Pasquet Borderies Lot 30.A 51.3% MAQUISARDS at €89 — the authenticity of the rarest cru, by an 11th-generation family artisan. Available at De Michellot.
