La Fourche du Diable: gentian harvesting tool and aperitif
De Michellot
La fourche du diable is a tool associated with harvesting gentian roots. The name is also used for a drink from Distillerie Louis Couderc. The tool, plant and finished drink are different things.
A tool for harvesting roots
La Source distillery describes using this fork to lift gentian roots. This explains the harvesting vocabulary; it does not mean that La Source produces every drink carrying the name.
The La Fourche du Diable bottle
Retailer BienManger lists the Louis Couderc reference at 16% ABV in a 1-litre bottle. Check the exact reference and label when buying, as a producer may offer several products. Consult the seller directly for prices and stock.
Do all gentian drinks have the same recipe?
No. “Gentian” does not describe a single formula. Strength, sweetness, bitterness and other ingredients depend on the producer. A shared regional origin does not establish identical composition or production methods.
Before substituting a bottle
- Check the full name and ABV on both labels.
- Compare volume and price per litre.
- Read serving and storage directions.
- For cocktails, start with a small measured portion and adjust the mixer.
A lower-alcohol bottle is not necessarily less bitter. A sweet flavour does not establish low alcohol content.
De Michellot is a separate reference
De Michellot gentian liqueur is distinct from La Fourche du Diable and Suze. For a measured drink, see our tonic recipe with a gentian variation. Gentian in an alcoholic drink does not justify health-benefit claims.
