Mimosa flower liqueur or Mimosa cocktail: the differences

De Michellot

Mimosa flower liqueur is an alcoholic floral drink. The Mimosa cocktail combines orange juice and sparkling wine; its name does not imply that it contains mimosa flowers or liqueur.

An example of flower liqueur

Provençal producer Parpaioun Draïo describes a 40% ABV mimosa liqueur made with agricultural alcohol, fresh flowers, sugar and water. Those details apply to that specific product. Other producers may use different recipes and strengths.

The cocktail does not require mimosa liqueur

Our champagne Mimosa recipe uses 75 ml orange juice and 75 ml sparkling wine per glass. Chill both ingredients, add the wine gently and serve immediately. Adding floral liqueur creates a different variation, changing its sweetness and alcohol quantity.

Choosing a floral liqueur

  • Check the producer, full product name and ABV.
  • Read the available ingredient list and serving directions.
  • Compare bottle sizes and prices per litre.
  • Do not infer alcohol strength from colour or a delicate aroma.

A house serving suggestion

For a first cocktail trial, combine 20 ml mimosa liqueur, 10 ml lemon juice and 100 ml sparkling water over ice. Stir once. These are starting proportions, not an official producer recipe; adjust the mixer to the product. Garnish with washed lemon peel rather than decorative flowers not intended for food use.

Alcohol-free variation

For an alcohol-free orange fizz, combine 75 ml orange juice and 75 ml sparkling water. Mimosa liqueur is not an alcohol-free syrup substitute. Check the label of any flavouring ingredient you add.

De Michellot elderflower liqueur has a different floral profile: elderflower and mimosa are different flowers. See our flower liqueur guide for further distinctions.
