How to make mint liqueur?

Mint liqueur is a spirit made from mint leaves macerated and/or distilled in alcohol, then sweetened to achieve a perfect balance between freshness and sweetness. Very popular as a digestif or in cocktails, it seduces with its intense and natural aromas.

🌿 Ingredients for homemade mint liqueur:
100g fresh mint leaves (spearmint or peppermint, or a mixture of both)
500 ml of 40° neutral alcohol (vodka or fruit alcohol)
250 g of cane sugar
250 ml of water
(Optional): lemon zest or a few eucalyptus leaves for more complexity

👨‍🍳 Preparation steps:
Clean and dry the mint leaves without damaging them.
Macerate the leaves in alcohol in an airtight jar away from light for 10 to 15 days.
Strain the preparation to remove the leaves.
Prepare a sugar syrup (water + sugar heated until dissolved), then let it cool.
Mix the syrup with the flavored alcohol, then let it sit for 1 to 2 weeks before tasting.

👉 You get a homemade liqueur around 25 to 30% vol., to be kept cool, away from light.

What is the difference between mint liqueur and mint syrup?

Although they share the same main ingredient—mint—mint liqueur and mint syrup are two very different products, both in their composition and their use.

✅ Mint liqueur: an alcoholic drink with powerful aromas

Mint liqueur is a spirit drink made by macerating or distilling mint leaves in alcohol, with added sugar. It typically has an alcohol content of between 25% and 35%, like Michellot's mint liqueur, which is handcrafted in France with peppermint, spearmint, and eucalyptus. It's ideal as a digestif or in cocktails.

✅ Mint syrup: a non-alcoholic drink

Mint syrup, on the other hand, is a sweet, non-alcoholic preparation made from mint extract, water, and sugar. Widely used in refreshing drinks and desserts, it is suitable for both children and adults, but it is not a substitute for liqueur in a cocktail or alcoholic pastry recipe.

📌 Summary of differences:

| Characteristic | Mint liqueur | Mint syrup |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Alcohol content | Yes (25–35% vol.) | No |
| Use | Digestive, cocktails, pastries | Soft drinks, desserts |
| Taste | More complex, herbaceous, intense | Sweet, lighter |
| Manufacturing | Maceration or distillation | Infusion or flavorings in water |

👉 Michellot's mint liqueur offers a high-end and natural alternative for lovers of French spirits, not to be confused with a simple mint syrup.

What is the difference between mint liqueur and Get 27 or Get 31?

Get 27 and Get 31 are well-known brands of mint liqueurs, but they should not be confused with artisanal mint liqueurs. The main difference lies in the quality of the ingredients, the manufacturing process, and the flavor profile.

✅ Get 27 / Get 31: industrial mint liqueurs
Emblematic products of the 60s, Get 27 (green) and Get 31 (transparent) are mint liqueurs produced using an industrial process.
They are designed for a consistent taste, with the addition of artificial flavors, colors, and high sugar content.
Get 27 is 21% vol., while Get 31 is 24% vol., with a very sweet profile and freshness accentuated by additives.
✅ Michellot artisanal mint liqueur: a high-end product
Made in France from peppermint, spearmint and eucalyptus, our liqueur is distilled by hand.
No artificial flavors, no colors: just plants, grain alcohol and natural sugar.
It has an alcohol content of 35% vol., with a beautiful aromatic complexity and a long, minty and elegant finish.
📌 Summary of differences
Criterion Get 27 / Get 31 Michellot Mint Liqueur
Type of manufacturing Industrial Artisanal, French
Ingredients Artificial flavors, colors Natural plants, no additives
Alcohol content 21–24% 35%
Taste Very sweet, strong menthol Balanced, vegetal, complex
Use Popular cocktail (pool, etc.) High-end digestif, refined cocktail
👉 Michellot mint liqueur is ideal for those looking for a natural and elegant alternative to large industrial brands, without compromising on taste or quality.
