❓ FAQ – Everything you need to know about French gin

What is a French gin?

A French gin is a juniper-flavored spirit made in France from neutral agricultural alcohol (often wheat) and distilled with local or selected botanicals. Artisanal expertise and the influence of the terroir give French gin a unique signature, often more floral, herbaceous, or woody than its foreign counterparts.

What are the best French gin brands?

Some of the most renowned French gin brands include Citadelle, De Michellot, Generous Gin, Cognac Ferrand, Christian Drouin, and other artisanal distilleries. These houses emphasize quality ingredients and traditional distillation processes, often using copper stills.

How to taste a French gin?

French gin can be enjoyed neat, as a gin and tonic, or in sophisticated cocktails like the Negroni or the French 75. For optimal enjoyment, serve it with a neutral tonic and a botanical garnish (lemon zest, fresh herbs) to highlight its aromatic profile.

What is the difference between a French gin and an English gin?

English gin, particularly London Dry, is often drier and juniper-centric. French gin, on the other hand, explores more varied profiles, highlighting floral, spicy, or local botanicals (lavender, fennel, violet, angelica, etc.). It is also sometimes barrel-aged, like Citadelle x De Michellot, for a unique aromatic complexity.

Where to buy artisanal French gin?

You can buy artisanal French gin directly online from specialist sites like De Michellot, in spirits stores, or from select independent wine merchants. De Michellot offers limited editions, such as the Citadelle x De Michellot cuvée, aged for three years in cherry wood barrels.
