Tasting notes

Appearance: Michellot's gentian liqueur has a clear, luminous golden color with amber highlights. Its color evokes the richness of carefully infused alpine plants.

Nose: On the nose, the liqueur reveals an intense vegetal bouquet, dominated by gentian root. Fresh notes of oregano and a hint of citrus balance the bitterness, reminiscent of the meadows of Auvergne after the rain.

Palate: The attack is frank, lively and herbaceous. The gentian root brings a typical bitterness, quickly softened by the roundness of the sugar (100 g/L) and the aromatic freshness of the oregano. The mid-palate reveals nuances of bark, sweet ginger and alpine plants. The finish is long, persistent and elegantly bitter.

🧊 Serving suggestions
To be enjoyed neat, chilled, as an aperitif or at the end of a meal.
In a cocktail: 5 cl of gentian liqueur, 5 cl of tonic, 1 cl of crème de cassis – for an aperitif that is both fresh and complex.

Yes, it can enhance sauces, desserts or stews by adding a bitter and vegetal touch.

What is the best way to store gentian liqueur?

It should be stored at room temperature, away from light. Once opened, it can be refrigerated.

When to harvest gentian

Yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea) is generally harvested between late spring and early autumn, depending on altitude. Its roots, rich in bitter ingredients, are used in liqueur. The plant must be at least 5 to 10 years old for its roots to be sufficiently developed. At De Michellot, we select gentian roots from sustainable harvesting in Auvergne, respecting the plant and its ecosystem.

Gentian: where to find it?

Gentian grows naturally at high altitudes, primarily in European mountain ranges such as the Massif Central, the Alps, and the Pyrenees. It thrives in high-altitude meadows between 800 and 2,000 meters. At De Michellot, we source our wild gentian from French herbalists, particularly in Auvergne, a region emblematic of this precious plant. Its harvest is regulated to preserve natural resources.
